Welcome back to my second blog for "The Ultimate Fighter 11." I am sorry that I won't be continuing on "TUF" this year and essentially ended the streak of MMAjunkie.com bloggers making it to the finals.
The UFC has been a dream of mine since fighting, and it would have taken something more then a broken jaw to keep me from fighting for that dream. That "something" came in the form of a 35-year-old bald man named Dana White.
Leading up to this episode, I had basically been lying to anyone and everyone about my jaw. I actually went to the Zuffa dentist and had him convinced I had broken a tooth and not my jaw. The day AFTER I was sent home I was actually scheduled to have my "broken" tooth extracted.
Since coming home and having my jaw worked on, I found out I did not have a broken tooth at all – just the broken jaw. I cannot even imagine the pain that pulling my healthy tooth out would have been like with my broken jaw, but I was willing to find out if it meant I could stay.
The producers saw that I was tending to my jaw a lot in the bathrooms, and that is where I think it was discovered that I was much more injured then I had let on. It may seem "crazy" to be willing to fight and train with such a serious injury, but I think when you are chasing a dream you have to be willing to go through anything to catch them.
Being a part of the UFC is everything to me. It will be the payoff for all the tough fights on obscure promotions, the thousands of hours in the gym that no one will ever see, and the countless injuries. Being sent home was not the end of the journey, it was a detour on that road to my dreams. I would give anything to be fighting with the best fighters in the world, and I just have to keep working harder then the guy in front of me.
This week's episode of "TUF 11" started off with Dana, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz walking into the training center. All of us fighters were told to line up on the mat and the coaches would make "the announcement." For those of you wondering, no, it was not planned out. I had no idea thats what the announcement was.
I had been to the doctor the day before and I did know my jaw was fractured, but I had already trained and sparred for a week with the fractured jaw, so I assumed I was going to be the one to decide. They didn't say anything to me that day, and I assumed I was clear to fight.
When the coaches and Dana walked in, I assumed we were doing the next fight announcement. I figured when Dana called me up that it was my turn to fight. The fracture was very painful, but this was a once in a life time opportunity and I was ready to fight.
I would give anything to go back and keep my hands a little higher in my prelim fight. I guess Victor O'Donnell and I are even.
It was tough to be told I had to "leave," and it was pretty rushed. By the time I got to the house, they had packed my bags and had me a plane ticket and a ride to the airport. I've worked very hard for years to get where I was, and it was cut short and really I could blame no one.
I had the time of my life on the show and I learned a lot in my short time there. I met some great up-and-coming fighters and a couple legends of the sport. I will continue to grow as a person and a fighter and I hope you will see me back very soon so I can prove the first fight didn't show my full potential.
On my way out, I asked Tito to try to get Seth Baczynski back in the house, but as I was at the airport leaving, I saw Seth just arriving and it set in: the producers, Dana and the coaches knew the night before that I was going home.
I'm glad Seth was the one to replace me no matter how he got selected. I couldn't have picked a better person that deserves the opportunity. Seth is a great guy and a tough fighter. He is my MTX Audio teammate, and I had the opportunity to train and meet him before going on "TUF." He will represent me and MTX well, I am certain of that.
Thank you to everyone that has given me support along the way. All of the fans have been great to me, and you give me motivation to come back better.
Thank you MTX Audio and Magnetic Marketing for building my career and helping me get to the big stage. The support you give us fighters not only allows us to pursue these dreams but allows us to be better representatives of the sport.
I will learn from my mistakes and be back soon.
